How much pressure is applied? A Deep Muscle Massage incorporates deeper pressure than a Swedish Therapeutic or general relaxation massage. Your therapist will ask you throughout your session about your comfort level. Keep the following guidelines in mind when determining how much pressure is enough:
• On a scale of 1 to 10, you should not exceed a 7 or 8. • You should not be holding your breath. • You should not be "guarding or flexing" against the therapist.
If at any time you find yourself experiencing these conditions, you need to ask your therapist to decrease their pressure. As the tissue relaxes, a gradual increased pressure may be applied.
Working above a comfortable pain tolerance level is counterproductive to the desired effect of releasing muscular tension.
