Massage therapy for back pain

A study by the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle found that massage was more effective at treating low-back pain than medication. Patients who received massage once a week for 10 weeks were more likely to report that their back pain had improved, and improvements were still present six months after the study. Other research from the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Touch Research Institute showed that massage can decrease stress and long-term pain, improve sleep and range of motion, and help lower the incidence of depression and anxiety that often accompanies back pain.

Muscle Tracking

Muscles that are twisted or have been pulled out of alignment do not “track” in the direction that they are intended to contract. This creates strain and excess wear and tear on large joints, such as elbows, hips, knees and shoulders.

Let us show you how we can roll your muscle compartment to free it from restrictions with adjacent or deeper muscles. The result will be that your muscles will be realigned into a more efficient and freely moving position.

Does your arm or your shoulder hurt?

Arm and shoulder pain can come from issues with your rotator cuff. The rotator cuff consists of four separate tendons that form a continuous band encased in fascia: the subscapularis, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres minor. These tendons work together to allow smooth, coordinated movement in the shoulder. If you have pain when you move your arm or shoulder, that usually means that one of these tendons is injured.

Our therapists know how to differentiate which tendon in injured, therefore knowing where we need to focus our work.

Invest in Your Health

Research supports the value of massage therapy. Massage therapy provides many benefits, including improved concentration, energy, circulation and self-esteem, as well as reduces stress, fatigue and pain. It also helps with more acute health conditions.

Research shows:
— Alzheimer’s patients exhibit reduced irritability, pacing, and restlessness after neck and shoulder massage.
— Deep-tissue massage is effective in treating arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.
— Fibromyalgia patients receiving massage have fewer sleep problems and less anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, and stiffness.
— Massage during labor appears to help block pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and relax muscles. Some medical professionals say massage shortens labor.
— Massage can reduce sports-related soreness and improve circulation, and is beneficial in reducing symptoms associated with arthritis, asthma, burns, high blood pressure, and premenstrual syndrome.
— Oncology patients show less anxiety, depression, fatigue, nausea, and pain following massage therapy.
— Preterm babies receiving massage therapy gain more weight and have shorter hospital stays.
— Massage therapy is effective in reducing post-surgical pain and can even reduce the time required for post-operative hospital stays.

Many people are taking a close look at their budget. When considering what stays and what goes…remember the value of massage therapy to your health.
